A Look at the Thoth Tarot and Aleister Crowley January 14, 2009

The Thoth Tarot Deck was a tarot deck developed by the English occultist Aleister Crowley and illustrated on his instructions by Lady Frieda Harris. Aleister Crowley called the Thoth tarot deck, the book of Thoth and claimed that the deck reflected the wisdom of the ancient Egyptian book of Thoth. The tarot card descriptions found on the Thoth Tarot deck are different in symbolism and imagery compared to other standard tarot card decks.

Thoth is considered one of the most important deities of the ancient Egyptian pantheon. He is known as the God with the head of an ibis. He is the heart and tongue of the all-powerful Egyptian Sun God Ra. He translated the will of Ra into speech and is the divine communicator of Egyptian mythology. He was the scribe of the Gods and was called the God of Writing. The book of Thoth is used for divination through tarot cards. The tarot card descriptions on the Thoth deck are reflections of the great knowledge of the ancient Egyptians.

A cult of Thoth grew during the last years of the Egyptian civilization who claimed to predict the future through occult divination. Aleister Crowley claims that the Thoth tarot deck developed by him was based on the tarot card descriptions followed by the cult of Thoth. He developed the deck between 1938 and 1943. He commissioned Lady Frieda Harris to illustrate the deck based on his visions and based on the ancient Egyptian book of Thoth papyrus by Jasnow and Zauzich. It took five years to develop the deck because Crowley wanted the images to reflect different disciplines including science and philosophy.

The tarot card descriptions in the Crowley Thoth tarot deck are different from the Rider Waite and other standard tarot card decks. The Major Arcana or trump cards are 21 in number and consist of the fool, the Magician or Magus, the high Priestess, the Emperor, the Empress, the Hierophant, the lovers, the chariot, Adjustment, the hermit, the wheel of fortune, lust, the hanged man, death, art, devil, tower, star, moon, sun, aeon and the universe. Court cards in the Thoth minor Arcana deck are the prince, the princess, queen and the knight. While the suite of cups, disks, swords and wands remain the same, they are illustrated with an Egyptian hieroglyphic style. The pips of the minor Arcana in the Thoth deck relate to the signs of the zodiac with the aces depicting the root of the element they represent. Each pip card in each suite has an attribute.

The wand suite relates to the fire signs of the zodiac. The ace represents the root of the fire element 2 dominions, 3 virtues, 4 completion, 5 strife, 6 victory, 7valor, 8 swiftness, 9 strength and 10 oppression.

The cup suite represents the water signs of the zodiac. The ace represents the root of the water element, 2 love,3 abundance, 4 luxury, 5 disappointment, 6 pleasure, 7 debauchery, 8 indolence, 9 happiness and 10 safety.

The sword suite represents the air signs of the zodiac. The ace represents the root of the air element 2 peace, 3 sorrow, 4 truces, 5 defeats, 6 science, 7 futility, 8 interference, 9 cruelty and 10 ruin.

The disks suite represents the earth signs of the zodiac. The ace is the root of the earth element, 2 change, 3 work, 4 power, 5 worry, 6 success, 7 failure, 8 prudence, 9 gain and 10 wealth.

Women of the Tarot October 22, 2008

The High Priestess of the Tarot Women represents a virgin of sorts. She can be seen as being similar to the Greeks goddesses Athena, and Artemis. Many lunar images can be seen on various High Priestess cards because this image is that of a maiden moon or new moon.

This image is usually shown at the feet of the Waite version of cards, as the crescent. The moon, in all three phases is seen in the Isis crown on the card. Two horns depict the waxing and waning phases of the moon. A circle in the middle symbolizes the full moon. Many believe that the High Priestess is a guard of secrets and the mysteries of life.

This is because she is usually shown holding a book or some type of scroll. It is because of this that people believe she is telling us that many mysteries exist and at sometime we might be privy to these mysteries. Unfortunately right now these mysteries are guarded and protected only to be unraveled at another time.

Why? In the unconscious, our ego will only allow us to see truths if we pretend we exist isolated from the rest of the world. To enlighten us, the High Priestess usually tries to engulf us by making us question our very being. This would be our existence.

This is hard for people to accept as they are usually given very little information about their existence. That is all the High Priestess will allow. When a reading is performed, the High Priestess suggests people need to delve inside themselves to find peace.

Is it hard for people? It has been suggested that it can be hard for people to find a truth they cannot explain. When this happens people must accept that if they cannot find their truth or peace, then they need to be tranquil as to not totally lose this inner peace.

The Empress is a feminist of sorts. She embodies amiability, passion, and a desire for opulence. The Empress can be seen as being similar to Demeter, and Aphrodite. Aphrodite is known as the Goddess of love. Another name for Aphrodite is Venus.

Also symbolized by the Empress is a correlation between motherhood and a woman ’s sexual appetite. Great passion and a yearning for motherhood can be illustrated by the Empress. A female ’s sexual prowess can be associated with development and abundance of ferocity for life as depicted by the Empress. Early drawings of the vulva symbolize the relationship between fertility and emergence of human life.

Pleasures of life are associated with the Empress because of her direct relationship with fertility. In a reading the Empress is associated with life and emotions. She is also affiliated with the giving of herself like mother gives of herself to her children. Fertility of the body as well as the spirit is stressed by the Empress.

Often in Tarot readings, the Empress blinds us with passion, causing people to be blinded by their personal strife in life. Often the Empress is viewed as a mother in a reading.

The Empress may indicate infertility or rejection when reversed in a reading. Other times the Empress provides enlightenment in order to sway people to more insightful aspects of life, rather than just succumbing to their deepest yearning.

The Angel Egg Charm

This is an old charm used to bring “…all good things…” (peace, harmony and abundance) into your life.

  • Day: Sunday or Friday.
  • Angelic Hour: Michael (Sunday’s Hours: 1:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 3:00p.m., or 10:00p.m. Friday’s Hours: 7:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., or 9:00 p.m.) or Uriel (Sunday’s Hours:2:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 4:00 p.m., or 11:00 p.m. Friday’s Hours: 1:00 a.m., 8:00a.m., 3:00 p.m., or 10:00 p.m.).
  • You will need:
    • One large egg,
    • blue dye or food colouring,
    • a marker pen,
    • a needle,
    • a cork,
    • small items that signify harmony to you (gems, herbs, a lock of your hair etc.),
    • a blue candle.
  • Angels to Call:
    • Baglis, who inspires moderation and balance;
    • Barbelo, who brings abundance, goodness, and integrity;
    • Camael, who brings joy, happiness, and contentment (An Essene Prayer says: “Camael, Angel of Joy, descend upon the earth and give beauty to all things”);
    • Gabriel;
    • Hahaiah, who gives us loving thoughts;
    • Rhamiel, who provides kindness and compassion;
    • Samandiriel, who inspires creativity and a vivid imagination.
  • Use a marker and draw a circle that is the same size as the small end of the cork on the large end of the egg. Poke a little hole in the small end of the egg with the needle. Turn the egg over and make a bigger hole on top, close to the edges of your marker line. Be careful, if you apply too much pressure, you’ll break the egg. Take your time, and drain the egg. Shake the egg occasionally to help it along. Let the egg dry completely (those of you who blew birds’ eggs as children will have no problem with this).
  • Colour the egg with the colouring or dye. Be careful not to break the shell. If you don’t have the dye or colouring, use markers. Paint or draw whatever symbols you like on the shell that indicate harmony to you.
  • Take the shell and put it in direct sunlight. This is to help it dry; even if you use markers that dry immediately, you still need to put the shell in the sun for a few minutes, asking your angels to bless it.
  • Fill the egg with the things that indicate harmony to you and place it on your altar or in your sacred space. As you place each item in the egg, you may wish to recite any prayers or invocations that you would like to use.
  • Hold the filled shell in both hands out in front of you. State your purpose and call upon the angels whom you wish to empower the items. Ask them to bring you the harmony that you seek.
  • Light the blue candles, asking the angels to speed this work on its way.
  • Now very, very carefully, put the cork in the egg.
  • You may leave the egg on your altar for as long as you wish. When you are ready to part with it, bury it in the ground near your home. You may bury it right away if you like, but many people like to leave the egg on their altar for at least seven days. It is your choice.
  • Close down your ritual, remembering to thank the angels you have called on for assistance.
  • Let the blue candle burn until it is completely gone.

Let the Angels Right Injustice

Ask the angels to help you right any injustice done by a plotting, scheming, and conniving person. This is an old Scottish angel charm. The one who cast the charm went to where three streams met first thing in the morning and washed his or her face there, then said the following:

“Goddess, I am bathing my face in the nine rays of the sun. Sweetness be in my face, Riches be in my pocket, Gold honey be on my tongue, My breath as the incense, Black is yonder house, Blacker the men therein. I am the white swan, Queen (or King) over them. I will go in the names of the God and Goddess. In likeness of deer, in likeness of horse In likeness of serpent, in likeness of queen With help from the angels, more victorious am I than all persons…..Whenever you see the person who has committed the injustice or the gossip flitters down to you, say the following under your breath: “Angels sain the house from the site to summit My word above every person The word of every person below my feet….”

These charms are taken from a book called the Carmina Gaedelica, a collection of Scottish Gaelic prayers and invocations. These days, if you don’t live near the confluence of three streams, then running water from a tap will do just as well.

Letting the Angels Help You Study

Take a white candle and set it on the table where you are working. Talk to your Guardian Angels, indicating that you need help, what you are studying, and what your ultimate goal is. Light the white candle and keep it burning while you are working. You may also wish to ask any of the following angels for assistance:

  • Akriel, who inspires intellectual achievement, and helps improve your memory,
  • Ecanus, who inspires writers,
  • Liwet, who presides over original ideas and thoughts,
  • Mupiel, who helps you increase and keep your memory;
  • Samandiriel, who helps with your imagination,
  • Satarel, who is the angel of knowledge.

When you have finished, put the candle out and thank the angels for their assistance.
